The Euganean Hills perimeter, in one go

While the first Euganean Hills Ring cuts through the heart of the park, the E2 route is the official cycling path that traces the outer perimeter of the hills, linking towns and canals at their feet rather than climbing into the centre.

The stages follow one another in sequence: Battaglia Terme, Monselice, Este, Lozzo Atestino, Bastia, Treponti and finally Villa dei Vescovi, before returning to Montegrotto Terme.

Unlike the first ring's concentrated effort, here the elevation gain is spread out over the whole route, making it a long but steady ride โ€” ideal for an e-bike with good range.

โ™จ๏ธ

Battaglia Terme

Born around a 13th-century Venetian canal still used for navigation today. Its river port and the Museum of River Navigation tell the story of centuries of trade between the hills and the Venetian lagoon.

๐Ÿ—ผ

Monselice

Dominated by its castle and the Via Sacra, designed by architect Vincenzo Scamozzi: seven chapels climbing the hill to the Villa Duodo sanctuary at the summit.

๐Ÿฐ

Este

900 metres of Carraresi walls surround the historic centre, home to the National Atestino Museum, one of Veneto's most important archaeological collections.

โ›ฐ๏ธ

Lozzo Atestino

A small village at the foot of the Val di Lonte, a hidden valley among the hills with paths through woods and small streams โ€” a quiet break from the wider E2 loop.

๐ŸŒ‰

Treponti

An extraordinary 13th-century hydraulic system of three bridges crossing each other at different levels, connecting three different canals. The route also passes through nearby Bastia on the way here.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Villa dei Vescovi

A 1535 Renaissance villa, today owned by the FAI (Italian National Trust). Its loggias offer one of the finest panoramic views over the whole Euganean Hills park.

The flavours of the hills: wine, oil and country cooking

Along the E2 route you'll cross some of the area's best vineyards for Serprino DOC, a light, slightly sparkling white wine that's a perfect match for the area's cured meats and cheeses.

Look out, too, for the area's DOP extra virgin olive oil, certified under the Veneto Euganei e Berici label โ€” a product of the same volcanic hills you're riding around.

For a proper meal, choose bigoli al torchio with duck ragรน, or sopressa veneta with a side of fritole โ€” simple, hearty country dishes typical of the towns along this route.

5 facts you wouldn't expect

1
Treponti is a hydraulic engineering work from 1201. The three bridges you cross in quick succession at Treponti are part of a canal system built by the Republic of Venice to reclaim 50,000 hectares of marshland. The Serenissima understood 800 years ago that controlling water meant controlling food โ€” and the Paduan plain was the granary of Venice.
2
Petrarch chose Arquร  to die โ€” and succeeded. Francesco Petrarca moved to Arquร  in 1370, at the age of 66, choosing the Euganean Hills as his final retreat. He died there in 1374, found by his daughter with his head resting on a book. His tomb is still there, in the village square. The town has not changed substantially since then.
3
Euganean trachyte paved the streets of Venice. The stone you ride over at the foot of these hills along the E2 โ€” Euganean trachyte โ€” is the same stone used for millennia to pave Roman roads, then Venice's calli, and eventually the historic centres of Padua, Vicenza and Verona. The Calaone quarries were active as far back as the Bronze Age. The stone you cycle over has more than two thousand years of quarrying history behind it.
4
The Euganean Hills Park has more orchid species than the Venetian Alps. In proportion to its surface area, the Park hosts over 30 species of wild orchids โ€” more than any other protected area in the Veneto. The volcanic isolation of the Hills has created unique microclimates and substrates: some species grow only here, on these specific hills, and nowhere else in the world.
5
Serprino was the wine of the Venetian Doges. The Glera grape of the Euganean Hills โ€” the variety from which Serprino is made โ€” was the sparkling wine served at the banquets of the Republic of Venice long before the Prosecco of Valdobbiadene became famous. The name "Serprino" comes from the Latin serpula, referring to the climbing shoots of the vine. It has remained local and unknown to the wider public: if you find it at a winery at the right price, buy it.
